POWER OF THE UNIVERSE
The use of masks is an ancient practice of mankind. Ten thousand years ago craftsmen of the European Mesolithic period already developed elaborate masks. This tradition has been practiced throughout history by different cultures of primitive people as well as large civilization. Mask made of different materials have been used in different way.  In Puerto Rico, we  use in the Procession and Carnival.

With the time a religious syncretism was created in Puerto Rico in which black craftsmen designed and made different type of masks that represented their many beliefs and deities. These managed to blend with Christian practice.  This mask making tradition evolved and began developing its own peculiarities, particularly in coastal towns where the African population predominated.

Today, making masks is a hobby for exhibit  and for sale,  it is part of the economic of the handcraftmen.
